President Donald Trump slammed “crazy, risky, and illegal” immigration legislation he said would “absolutely kill jobs and kill our economy.”
“The Democrats are putting up with this, they’re letting us in for political purposes,” Trump said on Friday.
“It’s so ridiculous.”
“They’re saying they don’t want to hear what we have to say, but I’ve got to tell you, it’s just insane, and they’re laughing at us,” Trump added.
Trump’s administration has repeatedly claimed the bill would force some undocumented immigrants to leave the country, but Trump’s own Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said it would allow those in the country illegally to be given temporary work permits and citizenship protections.
“These are people that have made a fortune,” Kelly said.
“They’re going to be able to go back to work.
They’re going be able get health care, and I think that’s going to create jobs.”
Trump has also suggested that he could push for the repeal of a provision that would allow undocumented immigrants who were convicted of serious crimes to be sent back to their home countries to face deportation, although it was not clear whether this provision would be removed entirely or would be extended to include people convicted of misdemeanors or felony offenses.
“You’re going back, I can tell you that,” Trump told a crowd in New Hampshire on Thursday.
“We’re going [to] keep the dream alive.”
